Arizona Wild Horses: A Legacy Worth Protecting

Arizona Wild Horses: A Legacy Worth Protecting

I would love to introduce you to one of the biggest icons of the wild West, the Arizona Salt River wild horses! The Salt River Wild Horses are historic and majestic creatures wandering freely along the lower Salt River in the Tonto National Forest in Arizona. The horses are the pride of the community, a favorite focal point of local photographers and the biggest icon of the wild West.

As of now, there are approximately three hundred and ten wild horses protected in pursuant to Arizona Revised Statute 3-1491, humanely under contract with the AZ Department of Agriculture including a fertility control program to stabilize the growth rate.

Today, wild horses remain in ten western states, and although they are protected by federal law, the threat to their continued presence on public lands has never been greater. There is a major move by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to depopulate wild horses from the public lands in the West.

What would life be without these majestic wild horses? As a Salt River Wild Horse volunteer, it’s our mission and goal to keep wild horses in their federally designated habitats and to manage their growth through the application of fertility control that is safe and humane.

The Wild horses are symbolic of freedom, and I dream of future generations preserving wild horses forever. I couldn’t be prouder to be a volunteer advocating for the freedom of all wild horses.
